How to use the CPM calculator

  1. Type two numbers: total cost (what you spent), CPM (the price for every 1,000 times your ad is shown) or impressions (how many times your ad was shown).
  2. The missing number fills in as you type, so you never have to do the math yourself.
  3. Change any box and the answer changes with it. Press Copy result to paste the answer somewhere else. To send your numbers to someone, share the page link (the web address at the top of your browser).

CPM formula

CPM is the price for showing your ad 1,000 times. Each time your ad appears on someone's screen is called an impression. The Interactive Advertising Bureau, a trade group for online advertisers, sets the official counting rules, but you do not need them to use the calculator. If you know any two of the numbers, one of these formulas finds the third. The calculator does the work for you, so you only need the formulas to check it by hand.

Show the three formulas
  • CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
  • Cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000
  • Impressions = cost ÷ CPM × 1,000

Say you spend $500, and your ad is shown 100,000 times. Your CPM is then $5.00. So you paid $5 for each 1,000 times your ad was shown.

CPM calculator FAQ

What is CPM?

CPM stands for cost per thousand: the price of showing your ad 1,000 times. With a $10 CPM, every 1,000 times your ad is shown costs $10, whether or not anyone clicks it.

How do you calculate CPM?

Type what you spent and how many times your ad was shown. The calculator gives the CPM.

See the math

By hand, divide what you spent by the times your ad was shown, then multiply by 1,000.

How do you calculate impressions from CPM?

Type the money you plan to spend and the CPM. The calculator shows how many times your ad will be shown. A higher CPM means the same money gets your ad shown fewer times.

See the math

By hand, divide the money you plan to spend by the CPM, then multiply by 1,000.

How much will a campaign cost at a given CPM?

A campaign is just a set of ads you run. Type the CPM and how many times you want your ad shown, and the calculator gives the cost. A higher CPM, or more times shown, means a higher cost.

See the math

By hand, multiply the CPM by the number of times your ad is shown, then divide by 1,000.

What is a good CPM?

It depends on where your ad runs, because each site or app has its own usual price. Triple Whale, a company that sells software to online stores, studied more than 40,000 of them from August 2025 to July 2026 (Triple Whale, August 2026). On Instagram and Facebook, the typical price was $15.06 for every 1,000 times an ad was shown. Half the stores paid more than that and half paid less. If you pay less than that and your ad still reaches the people you want, your CPM is a good one.

What is the difference between CPM and cost per impression?

Cost per impression is the price of showing your ad once. CPM is the price of showing it 1,000 times. So each single time your ad is shown costs far less than the CPM, because the CPM pays for 1,000 of them.

Are impressions the same as reach?

No. Impressions count every time your ad is shown, even if the same person sees it twice. Reach is the number of different people who saw it. So if one person sees your ad three times, that is 3 impressions but a reach of 1.

How do you convert CPM to CPC?

CPC stands for cost per click: what you pay each time someone clicks your ad. To find it, you also need the click-through rate (CTR): out of every 100 people who see your ad, how many click it. A low CTR means each click costs more.

See the math

For example, if 1 in every 100 people clicks (a 1% CTR), an ad shown 1,000 times gets 10 clicks. At a $5 CPM, each click costs $0.50. In general, first multiply your CTR by 10. That gives the clicks you get from every 1,000 times your ad is shown. Then divide the CPM by that number of clicks. To go back from CPC to CPM, take the price of one click and multiply it by the clicks from every 1,000 times your ad is shown.
